The Deva Asura War

Advaita - There is only One and Thou art That. This world is an appearance, just like an image in the mirror.

There is one Brahman - Saguna and Nirguna; Saguna with Maya and Nirguna without.

There is nothing to fear nor hate, no desires to be deluded by.

To have compassion for all, hatred for none. To see all this world as oneself and act for duty's sake and for nothing called "I"

It doesn't matter if all of this is true

What matters is that it's good for you

To believe it to be true

These concepts may be transcendent (paroksa) now

But start today to make it direct experience (aparoksa) for you

This is the eternal divine war of the good (deva) and bad (asura) within none but you

Every time the bad won, the subtle deviant tendencies (vasanas) grew

And over lifetimes they became entrenched inside you (samskaras)

Causing birth and death and then birth again and again

This war has been going on for ages

The only way to stop is

To believe it to be true

There is but One that exists

That One is the world, that One is you too

Motto of Sanatana Dharma

In the 2004 film Troy, the character of the brave prince Hector uttered these memorable lines while exhorting his soldiers to fight against a much stronger army.

All my life I've lived by a code and the code is simple: honor the gods, love your woman and defend your country. Troy is mother to us all. Fight for her!

In the same vein, in India we would say this, although somewhat differently:

The code of our Sanatana dharma is 1. to follow our father and guru, obey their orders, 2. to love and adore our mother, motherland, 3. to respect all beings, all paths and 4. to seek refuge of, and surrender to God. Hope you have noted the subtleties of the difference in attitude.

Couple of examples come to mind – one of the Rama with the bow (Śrī Rāma or Rāma Dāśarathi) and the other the Rama with the axe (Paraśurāma).

Sri Rama obeyed the order of his father unquestioningly and accepted to go the forest and that too just before he was to be coronated as the crown prince. When he broke the news to his mother, she wept and ordered him not to go. But he didn’t relent as the orders of father and guru have to be followed. Yet he loved his mother. After killing Ravana, when Lanka lay at his mercy and he could have ruled a much richer kingdom – he told Lakshmana –

I am not tempted by the rich allures of Lanka,

for mother and motherland are even above Svarga

And we know that he returned back to Ayodhya. On the way when he met Rishi Bharadvāja, the only thing about his family that he wished to know about were whether Bharata was ruling well and whether his mothers were alive.

When he was unexpectedly asked to go to the forest, such was the incredible twist of Fate – yet Rama accepted it with equanimity, for he believed in surrendering to Fate and following one’s dharma – here dharma was to obey his father and king’s orders. Rama was God incarnated himself, yet he unflinchingly followed the dictates of karma. He showed us that one should believe in a higher power and accept one’s fate without demur, yet not be depressed, rather strive to do one’s dharma. Your job is to act, not to worry about the fruit – to paraphrase the oft-quoted message from Bhagavad Gita.

Paraśurāma too loved his mother Renuka a lot, yet when his father ordered to execute Renuka (we will not get into the reasons here), he followed that order unquestioningly and killed his beloved mother. In accepting the order, he both obeyed his father as well as surrendered to God’s will (though he too was God incarnated). But when his pleased father gave him a boon, Parasurama, unhesitatingly asked first for the life of his mother to be restored.

As love for mother, so is love for motherland. India is a nation blessed with deshabhaktas ever willing to sacrifice their life for the sake of motherland. Almost every day we lose a fearless soldier or two in the line of duty. They too follow the orders of the government and army, they too love their motherland and they too surrender their lives to God. Hence we have battle cries like “Raja Ramachandra ki jai” or “Durga Mata ki jai” or “Dada Kishan ki jai” so on and so forth.

So to sign off: Obey your father and guru, Love your mother and motherland, Respect every being and Surrender to God – that’s the motto of this land called Bhārata

Rishi's intuition in samadhi

I watched a Youtube video of a foreigner who was trying to understand about Hinduism. And in course of this he expressed disbelief of how the Rishis in their samadhi or deep absorption could have revelations of the fundamental truths, principles of the universe.

Interestingly the very next day I was watching a video by Swami Sarvapriyananda of Swami Vivekananda's experiences at Almora.

And just before that I was reading about Big Bang.

And suddenly all these came together to enable me to make the following comment under that YouTube video which I am reproducing here.

"Regarding how the Rishis intuited the universal truths through their meditation - which Westerners find difficult to believe - I will give one relatively modern example to drive home the point.

Swami Vivekananda is a 19th century saint, teacher revered by many. His devotees consider him to be incarnation of a Rishi i.e. sage.

And I am going to tell you of a well documented incident. At a place known as Kakrighat near Almora, India, in the Himalayan foothills he went into deep meditation which is called samadhi - and when he came out of it, he told his brother-disciple that he understood a mystery which he really wanted to know about - he saw the universe as a atom. Now this is late 1890s, much before Big Bang was proposed in the 1940s. And even as per Big Bang, the time from where we can measure things is from 10 to power -35 sec after Big Bang. By then the universe was the size of a pea, much bigger than an atom.

So what Swami ji saw in his samadhi is much closer to origin of universe. And he said an atom - because in his time the smallest particle known was atom. Only a few years later were electrons, protons etc discovered. Maybe he had seen an even smaller particle than an atom, but there was no word for it then.

Here is a modern, recorded example of a person who intuited something, not through modern rational thinking and its mathematical or physical tools, but through the power of connecting to the One Consciousness that pervades everywhere.

Grace of Guru

Feeling high and mighty  we build castles in the air

Unaware that without the Guru's grace, it's just a pack of cards

Blown away by the gusts of wind or swept off by the floods

It's only in misery does

This foolish mind remember of Guru n God

He who grants the light of knowledge dispelling ignorance and darkness once for all

Like the light streaming through the doorway of a just opened ancient vault

Established unshaken in wisdom, adorned with the essence of True Knowledge

Who provides for both material plenty n spiritual bliss, Salutations to that Teacher-Lord

Dakṣiṇa Kāli Dhyāna Shloka Translation

Karāla vadanām ghorām muktakeśīm caturbhujām
Kālikām dakṣiṇām divyām muṇḍaṁāla vibhuṣitām

Her mouth is gaping wide open, such terrifying sight, with braid free, and four hands
She is Daksina Kali, the Divine One, ornamented by a garland of human heads

Khaḍgābhaya varāmścinnam muṇḍam ca dadhatim karaiḥ
Mahāmeghaprabhām śyāmām tathā caiva digambarām

A scimitar, a blessing of fearlessness, and of boons, and of human head (signifying our arrogance) she holds in her hands
Of the hue of dark rain bearing clouds she is clad is the directions i.e. without clothes

Kaṇṭhāvasaktamunḍāli galad-rudhira-carcitām
Karṇāvasaṁtānitaśavayugma virājitām

The human heads hanging from around her neck – blood from them dripping is anointing her throat.
Her ears are adorned with twin dead bodies wrapped around

Ghoradaṁṣṭrām karālāsyām pinno-unnata-payodharām
Śavānām karasanghātaiḥ kr̥takāncim hasanmukhim

With terrible protruding teeth and gaping face, full and uplifted heavy breasts
From her waist a skirt of human hands hangs as a girdle, as she smiles

Sr̥kkadvayagaladrakta dhāravisphuritānanām
Ghorarupām maharaudrim smaśānanilayavāsinīm

Blood is dripping from the corners of her mouth onto her neck
Giving her a terrific visage, She is the Great Raudri who resides in cremation grounds

Danturām dakśiṇām vyālīyuktalambikacoccayām
Śavarūpamahādeva hr̥dayoparisaṁsthitām

Her tongue lolls out through protruding teeth, her hair dense on the southern side
She is established (with her feet planted upon) the heart of Mahadeva who is lying in a lifeless form

Śivābhirghorarāvābhir-caturdikṣu samanvitam
Mahākālasamāyuktām śarvoparīratānvitām

Female jackals are howling in a heart rending manner which is reverberating in all four directions
She (Kali) is One with Mahākāla, in communion with śarva (a name of śiva)

Sukhaprasannavadanām smerānanasaroruhām
Evam saṁcintayetkālīm smaśānalayavāsinīm

Radiating happiness and contentment with a lotus like smiling face
Thus we meditate upon the Kali who resides in cremation grounds

Kapilāratnasampūrṇapr̥thvidānasya yatphalam
Koṭihomasahasrasya devya dhyānena tatphalam

A brown cow, gems, entire earth – the fruit derived from donation of all of these
And from a thousand crore homas, that much fruit is derived from meditating upon Devi (as mentioned above)

With feet, adorned by jewelry gem studded, full of beauty

Guruguha Ranjani Duritha Bhanjani Niranjani

She is verily like Siva, a parrot in (heart's) cage (refers to our atma in hrd chakra)
Blooming lotus like radiance
With mystical lore dalliance
Darkness removing brilliance.
Of spotless pure salience

Ab to hai tumse har khushi - song from Abhimaan 1973

Ab to hai tumase har khushi apani

Tumape marana hai jindagi apani

Jab ho gaya tumape ye dil diwaana

Fir chaahe jo bhi kahe hamako jmaana

Koi banaaye baaten chaahe ab jitani

Tere pyaar men badanaam dur dur ho ge

Tere saath ham bhi sanam mashahur ho ge

Dekho kahaan le jaaye bekhudi apani

Translation isn't exact, but I have tried to carry the meaning and spirit behind the words, while ensuring a poetic strain

Now rests with you all my happiness

Your life's station is my sole address

Now that my heart is mad in your love

Doesn't matter whatever they say above

What effect then has any duress

My love for you has earned me notoriety

Being with you has brought much infamy

Let's see it leads now to what mess

The lyrics are sweet and okay, but real steal for me is the music of S D Burman, it simply makes one feel nostalgic,  it pulls one to the past, to those sweet days gone by of innocent, maddening love.

Just after Lataji beautifully sings the first stanza in high pitch straightaway tugging at our heart strings, then Burman Saab brings in some heavy, somber, deep stringed instrument  .... it's like train taking you inexorably back in time. There's some connection to Bengal or Assam in that stringed music.

Then again a vocal interlude by Lataji before she sings the second stanza. It's so seamlessly melding from one to other and you have already embarked on the musical journey that Burman Saab and Lataji have planned for you. My only complaint is that this  beautiful nostalgic journey is so short, just 3 stanzas. I was in for a longer ride..

Principles to follow ever

May my mind be peaceful and content,

Hence let it not be provoked to anger,

Let me be humble and always willing to learn from others,

Let me never attack anyone in body, mind and speech,

Let me uphold my principles resolutely,

Let me not disrespect anyone whatever be their identity - by caste or religion, colour or creed, by language or gender,

May I never unnecessarily lose my strength and power by going against the above tenets,

May I be willing to sacrifice my own needs to bring people together, to make people tolerant of each other,

May I be pure in thought, word and deed,

May I utter good speech at all times and not that which causes discontent to others,

Protect me O Lord as I am a helpless child of Yours.

Shiva Tāṇḍava Stotram - 15

pujāvasāna-samaye daśa-vaktra-gītam
yaḥ śambu-pūjan-paraṃ paṭhati pradoṣe |

At the end of worship rituals, this Ravana's song the one who sings
After finishing the worship of Śiva, one who recites in the evenings

tasya sthirāṃ ratha-gajendra-turaṇga-yuktām
lakṣmīm sadaiva sumukhiṃ pradadāti śambhuḥ || 15 ||

By him is steady wealth, power, vehicles and all prosperity obtained
Lakṣmi always looks kindly upon him, Śiva's Blessings who has gained

Shiva Tāṇḍava Stotram - 14

imaṃ hi nityamevam-uktam-uttamottamaṃ stavaṃ
paṭhan-smaran-bruvan-naro vishuddhi-meti-santatam |

This truly is the best of the best laudatory hymn, that is to be sung daily
Reading, remembering and reciting this will make a man pure eternally

hare gurau subhaktimāśu yāti nānyathā gatiṃ
vimohanam hi dehināṃ suśaṇkarasya cintanam || 14 ||

Quickly it brings devotion to Guru and Śiva, Who are the only Refuge
All delusions break in the one, in whom only Śiva's Thought Imbues

Shiva Tāṇḍava Stotram - 13

kadā nilimpa-nirjharī-nikuñj-koṭare vasan
vimukta-durmatiḥ sadā śiraḥ-stham-añjalim vahan |

The celestial river flowing nearby, when shall I dwell, in a jungle cave secluded
Freed off all evil mental habits, when will I bow to the Lord, with hands folded

vilola*-lola-locano lalāma-bhāla-lagnakaḥ
śiveti mantra-muccaran-kadā sukhī bhavamyaham || 13 ||

Free of rolling lustful eyes, with Śiva's sacred mark on my forehead
When will I find happiness in the Name of Śiva ceaselessly chanted

* Note
"vilola" - most versions have mentioned the word "vimukta" instead of "vilola", while there are some version including the one from where I learnt use the word "vilola". While "vilola" and "lola" mean pretty much the same i.e. rolling, wayward, so it may seem that using the word "vimukta" i.e. becoming free is more apt in terms of meaning. But "vilola" is fitting the rhythm of sound better than "vimukta". I have chosen to keep the word "vilola", but the meaning I have given is considering the word "vimukta" was there i.e. freeing one from waywardness.

Shiva Tāṇḍava Stotram - 12

dṛṣad*-vicitra-talpayor-bhujaṇga-mauktika-srajor
gariṣṭha-ratna-loṣṭhayoḥ suhṛd-vipakṣa-pakṣayoḥ |

Appraising alike a bed of serpent or a pearl garland
A gem or a worthless stone, an enemy or one's own

tṛṇāravinda-cakṣuṣoḥ prajā-mahī-mahendrayoḥ
sama-pravṛtti-kaḥ kadā sadāśivaṃ bhajāmyaham || 12 ||

A humble grass or the lofty sun, a subject or a mighty lord
With such an impartial mind, That Shiva - when shall I adore

Note:
* - Some translations use the word "spṛṣad" i.e. "to touch" instead of "dṛṣad" i.e. "to see"
some word meanings:
talpa - couch, bed
mauktika - pearl
sraj - garland
tṛṇa - grass

Shiva Tāṇḍava Stotram - 11

jayat-vadabhra-vibhrama-bhramad-bhujaṇgamaśvasad
vinirgamat-krama-sphurat-karāla-bhāla-havya-vāṭ |

Hail victory! In the Tāṇḍava*, the frenetically reeling serpent's panting breaths
due to His vigorous dance flares the terrible fire blazing out of His Forehead

dhimid-dhimid-dhimi-dhvanan-mṛdaṇga-tuṇga-maṇgala
dhvani-krama-pravartita-pracaṇḍa-tāṇḍavaḥ śivaḥ || 11||

With the sonorous sound Dhim Dhim Dhim*, pulsating from His highly auspicious drum (mṛdaṇga)
In tandem with the terrible Tāṇḍava of Shiva, the sound reverberates in an incessant hum

Note:

*   -  “In the Tāṇḍava” is not mentioned in the stotram, its something I added for the rhythm and to confirm the context is of the Tandava.

** - My Guru has taught us that the sound of Dhim Dhim Dhim indicates - Dhi i.e. intellect and when the intelligence shines, then there is peace and amity - it exalts (tuṇga) Mangala or Mars. this is converting the energy of strife and war into positive energy of peace and contentment. Thus the Shiva Tāṇḍava Stotram blesses us with the intellectual strength, so that we forsake strife and bring peace in our lives.

Shiva Tāṇḍava Stotram - 10

akharva sarva maṇgala kalā kadamba mañjari
rasa pravāha mādhuri vijṛmbhaṇa madhu vratam |
(Lord Shiva is) Perfect and Complete Auspiciousness, like a cluster of blooming Kadamba flowers
From which flows beautiful nectar, dispersing in the air to attract the nectar lovers (bees)

smarāntakaṃ purāntakaṃ bhavāntakaṃ makhāntakaṃ
gajāntākāndhakantakaṃ tamantakāntakaṃ bhaje || 10||
Who caused the end of the god of desire, and the three cities
And the end of worldly delusion and vain sacrificial activities
Who caused the end of the demons - Andhaka and elephant (Gajāsura)
And of god of death himself, to Him (Lord Shiva), in reverence I bend

Shiva Tāṇḍava Stotram - 9

praphulla nīla pañkaja prapañca kālima prabha
valambi kaṇṭha kandali ruci prabaddha kandaram

Having the lustre of dark universe
Like a fully blossomed blue lotus
dangling down, such is the girdle of poison* (Halāhala)
Shining in His Neck, but put in restriction

smaracchidam puracchidam bhavacchidam makhacchidam
gajacchidāndhakacchidam tamantakacchidam bhaje

Who destroyed the god of desire, and the three cities,
And the worldly delusion, and vain sacrificial activities
Who destroyed the demons - Andhaka and the elephant (Gajāsura)
And god of death himself, to Him (Lord Shiva), in reverence I bend

*Note: some translators have mentioned blue lotus which is offered in temples. But its obvious what is the blue colour and darkness in Lord Shiva's neck referring to, it is the Halāhala poison which He gulped to save the Universe during the Samudra Manthana.
https://greenmesg.org/stotras/shiva/shiva_tandava_stotram.php - also seems to aver to this, thought not explicitly

Shiva Tāṇḍava Stotram - 8

navīna-megha-manḍali niruddha-durdhara-sphurat
kuhū-niśīthinī-tamaḥ prabandha-baddha-kandharaḥ |

Like a newly formed mass of dark rain-bearing clouds, trembling and difficult to be restrained
Such calamitous darkness like a midnight's new moon, He ties it, keeping to His Neck detained*

nilimpa-nirjhari-dharas-tanotu kṛtti-sindhuraḥ
kalā-nidhāna-bandhuraḥ śriyaṃ jagad-dhurandharaḥ ||

Ye who holds the celestial stream
Ye clad in a dead elephant's skin
On Whom rests the lovely crescent
Ye world-Upholder, may we be content,

Shiva Tāṇḍava Stotram - 7

karāla-bhāla-paṭṭika-dhagad-dhagad-dhagad-jvalad
dhanañjayāhutī-kṛta-pracaṇḍa-pañca-sāyake

A monstrous cleavage on His Brow, where Dhag Dhag sputters the fire (the third eye)
Into this great sacrificial fire is made the offering of the God of Desire

dhara-dharendra-nandinī-kucāgra-citra-patraka
prakalpanaika-śilpini trilocane ratir-mama

On the tip of bosom of the daughter (Devi Parvati), of the Mountain Lord, who supports the earthly orb
Who sketches decorative lines, I am captivated by that Great Artist, my Three-eyed Lord

Note: one wonders what is the significance behind the statement of Lord Shiva tracing lines or pictures on the tip of bosom of the Devi. From the translation given at this site: https://greenmesg.org/stotras/shiva/shiva_tandava_stotram.php , my understanding is that it shows that Lord Shiva is creator or designer who employs the material from Devi to shape the creation. The choice of mentioning the bosom shows specifically that the Devi is the Mother to the creation. Lord Shiva assigns Her as the Mother of the Creation.
